United States, 3rd Sep 2024 - Parenthood brings a whirlwind of changes, especially when welcoming a new baby into the family. From the moment the baby arrives, life shifts dramatically for Mom and Dad, usually for the better. Children have a unique way of reminding parents that life is no longer just about them. They now have the responsibility to care for, protect, and nurture their little one for at least the next eighteen years.
Just when parents think they have a handle on the challenges of infancy and toddlerhood, it seems like it's time for their child to start school. How quickly the time passes! One of the most crucial duties parents have is to ensure their children receive the best possible education. A key part of this responsibility involves staying actively involved with the school to support excellence in academics, arts, and athletics.
Opportunities for Parental Involvement:
1. Family Faculty Organization (FFO) (similar to the PTA: Parent Teacher Association):
This organization allows parents to gain insight into the happenings within their children’s schools, particularly at the elementary level.
2. Site Council:
Typically composed of parents, teachers, and the principal, the role of the Site Council can vary by school. Sometimes it plays a significant role in school administration, while at other times it serves as an advisory group with no decision-making power. In my experience as a member of a Site Council, our primary task was to plan and host a day celebrating the joy of reading in an elementary school. It was an enjoyable and rewarding experience!
3. Booster Clubs:
These parent-led groups generally support various programs at the high school level, including sports and performing arts such as football, baseball, and the school band. Booster clubs offer great opportunities for parents to get involved in the extracurricular activities their children participate in.
4. Attend Governing Board (Board of Education) Meetings:
While not everyone’s idea of an exciting evening, attending or reviewing the minutes of Board of Education meetings is an excellent way to understand the inner workings of the school district and stay informed about issues that may directly affect your child. With many meetings now recorded on video, it’s easier than ever to stay updated from the comfort of your home. Minutes and other relevant documents are also available for public review.
The more informed and engaged parents are in their child’s education, the more likely their children will excel in academics, sports, and the arts.
